NWS says Sunday might be a scorcher
IRON MOUNTAIN — Hot weather is expected this weekend into early next week, with the National Weather Service predicting a high Sunday of 93 degrees in the Iron Mountain area.
The burst of heat accompanies a heat dome breaking off from the Great Plains and pushing eastward, according to AccuWeather meteorologist Alex Sosnowski.
A cooldown is expected to follow, with highs in the upper 70s predicted locally for Wednesday and Thursday.
Today’s predicted high is 86, while Monday’s high could reach 91. There is a chance of rain or thunderstorms early Monday. The predicted high Tuesday is 82.
An air quality advisory for the Upper Peninsula was issued Friday after smoke from Canadian wildfires moved into the region.
Record-high temperatures at Iron Mountain-Kingsford during the last week of July range from 93 degrees on July 25, 1949, to an all-time high of 104 degrees reported on July 29, 1917.
