Officer injured in armed robbery arrest

MARQUETTE — A Marquette Police Department officer had minor injuries after attempting to arrest a suspect in an armed robbery at a convenience store early Friday.

MPD officers responded about 1:55 a.m. to the Midjim Convenience Store, 301 W. Fair Ave., according to MPD’s Det. Capt. Chris Aldrich.

“A male reportedly robbed the business of merchandise while armed with a baseball bat,” Aldrich said in a written statement. “Responding officers located the suspect outside the business still holding a baseball bat. Upon contact the suspect put the bat down and initially began to follow the officer’s commands. Moments later, as officers were approaching, the suspect became noncompliant and began to run away.”

A short foot pursuit ensued and officers were able to catch the suspect, he said. At this time the suspect proceeded to punch an officer in the face before being brought into custody.

The officer was treated at UP Health System-Marquette for minor injuries and released. The suspect, a 40-year-old Ishpeming resident, was also taken to UPSH-Marquette for evaluation, then placed in the Marquette County Jail.

The man was arrested on multiple charges, including robbery-armed (life felony), police officer-assaulting/resisting/obstructing causing injury, a four-year felony; four counts of police officer-assaulting/resisting/obstructing, a four-year felony; and retail fraud-third degree, a 93-day misdemeanor.

The suspect’s name will not be released until his arraignment.

Assisting with the incident was the Northern Michigan University Police Department, Marquette County Sheriff’s Office, Marquette City Fire Department and UPHS-Marquette EMS.
