One dead in roundabout motorcycle crash in Marquette Township

MARQUETTE — A Sault Ste. Marie man died early Thursday after crashing his motorcycle in a roundabout on U.S. 41 near Walmart in Marquette Township.

The motorcycle was eastbound on U.S. 41 as it approached the roundabout about 5:12 a.m. near County Road HQ when the driver appeared to have lost control and hit the roundabout berm, throwing him from the vehicle, according to the Michigan State Police Negaunee Post news release.

Troopers attempted lifesaving measures, including CPR, before EMS arrived, but the 40-year-old male was pronounced dead on site a short time later. The man’s name was withheld to give the family privacy, the news release stated.

Excessive speed appears to have contributed to the cause of the crash and the driver was not wearing a helmet, according to MSP. The crash remains under investigation.

MSP was assisted by the Marquette County Sheriff’s Office, Marquette Township Fire and Rescue Department and the City of Marquette Fire Department.
