Wisconsin man dies in Ontonagon gravel pit

ROCKLAND — The Ontonagon County Sheriff’s Department is investigating the death of a Wisconsin man in what it described as a “mine accident” Thursday near Rockland.

A deputy was dispatched at 2:20 p.m. Thursday to assist EMS personnel at the Highpoint Gravel Pit in Rockland Township, according to a sheriff’s department news release.

Terry Gene Johnson, 50, of Manawa, Wis., was pronounced dead at the site.

The incident is being investigated by the Mine Safety and Health Administration. The sheriff’s department stated in the news release that no further details will be released until the investigation is completed.

Assisting was SONCO Ambulance, Michigan State Police, Michigan Department of Natural Resources Law Enforcement, Rockland Volunteer Fire Department, Ontonagon County Medical Examiner’s Office and Cane Funeral Home.
