Homecoming game canceled at IM after threat

IRON MOUNTAIN — A homecoming football game scheduled for Friday night at Mountaineer Stadium was canceled in what officials at Iron Mountain Public Schools said was “an abundance of caution” over a reported threat against a member of the West Iron County Schools staff.

Other homecoming activities at Iron Mountain were taking place as scheduled as officials said “there is no reason to believe that there is any threat to the Iron Mountain community.”

Classes took place as scheduled Friday at West Iron County Schools, but Superintendent Kevin Schmutzler said the district decided to cancel the football game due to an ongoing investigation.

Information about the reported threat had first been shared with district staff and families on Wednesday evening, Schmutzler said.

“Multiple law enforcement agencies are involved and continuing their thorough investigation. The individuals involved are not West Iron County students,” he said in a statement Friday. “We have no reason to believe there is an immediate threat to our campus safety.”

In announcing the game’s cancellation, Iron Mountain Public Schools said the district has been working closely with West Iron County Schools and multiple law enforcement agencies.

“Based on the information provided, there is no reason to believe that there is any threat to the Iron Mountain community. Law enforcement has determined there is no immediate threat for the safety of our schools,” the district said in an email Friday.

“Out of an abundance of caution and respect for the safety of our students, families and community members, tonight’s scheduled football game between West Iron County and Iron Mountain has been canceled,” the statement continued. “We understand this is disappointing for our players, families, and fans, and we sincerely appreciate your understanding and support.”

Students and families were encouraged to report any concerning behavior to law enforcement or a trusted adult immediately.
