Kingsford plans paving near airport
KINGSFORD — Bacco Construction of Iron Mountain has been chosen to repave two roads near Ford Airport on a bid of $154,650.
The work is for about 1,700 feet on North Riverhills Road and about 1,000 feet on Riverhills Road.
The Kingsford City Council received a second bid from Payne and Dolan of Gladstone for $162,850. The city had $150,000 budgeted for the work and hopes to have it done this fall, weather permitting.
In other action Tuesday, the council:
— Learned the city’s recycling program will start in January. Kingsford is offering the program with Norway to help keep costs down. City residents can have curbside recycling once a month for $7.70. The cities still must complete a contract with Green For Life, which will do the recycling. They hope to have it completed by Nov. 1 so the company can order the 96-gallon cans needed to hold the recyclables.
— Reported the Dickinson County Armory will not be available for the city’s annual Christmas Tree Lighting event because of renovations. The event will instead be held in the Kingsford High School gymnasium on Dec. 18. City Manager Mike Stelmaszek told the board the school was happy to help out, because many students take part.
— Received an update on blighted properties. Ken Wood, the newly hired dangerous building hearing officer, has been assigned eight properties to look at. There are about 15 to 20 properties needing attention, according to city accessor Kyle Mulka. In a report to the council, Mulka indicated they are working on reports and form letters to make the process more efficient. Administrative Assistant/AP Clerk Jennifer Castro is helping convert them to fillable PDFs. He is also working with Breitung Township, which has a similar ordinance.
