This week’s Back to the Present, provided by the Florence County Historical Museum, looks back at the log church in Tipler, Wis.
The simple little log building is the home of St. Paul’s Evangelical Lutheran Church on Dream Lake Road, near the town hall.
Tipler is west end of Florence County and was established in 1916, from part of Florence Township.
The log structure was first built as a private home to Ross and Eunice Toole.
A church dedication took place on Oct. 19, 1941. It was through the efforts of The Rev. Melvin Croll, pastor of St. John’s Lutheran Church in Florence, that the little congregation was formed on Oct. 24, 1940. Members met in the local schoolhouse or in private homes, and realized they needed a real church building.

The search for a building led them to the Toole family log house.
Members of the St. Paul’s congregation purchased the building for $100 for a permanent home.
Several improvements have been made on the building over the years. The bell tower was added in 1958, which calls members to worship each Sunday.
The interior has been made more comfortable with an addition to increase the seating capacity, a gas heater and window improvements.
A small privy was built near the back of the building, with no water facilities available.

The Rev. Jason Liebenow of St. John’s Evangelical Lutheran Church in Florence offers worship service each Sunday at the little log church.
During the Florence County Centennial in 1980, residents believed it’s one of only a few log churches in the United States that still have regular Sunday services.
Whether it is summer or winter, regular attendance of members remains constant for the 7:15 a.m. service.
Members also have a regular Bible study and a council meets to attend to any business of the church.
This is a welcoming church, inviting anyone who wishes to attend to come and fill the pews.
