Breitung to acquire radar speed signs
QUINNESEC — Breitung Township will acquire three new radar speed signs to calm traffic near parks in Quinnesec and East Kingsford.
Two of the signs will replace flashing units due for replacement on Lincoln Avenue where eastbound and westbound traffic approaches Quinnesec Park. A third sign will be placed in the area of East Kingsford Park.
The EVOLIS solar-powered signs and mounting kits will be purchased through New York-based ElanCity at an anticipated total cost of $10,349.
Superintendent Steve Mulka recommended getting two new signs for Lincoln Avenue, but the township board decided Monday to order one for East Kingsford as well.
At the urging of Supervisor Denny Olson, the township will also explore the cost of acquiring a mobile unit that can be placed on a trailer. “I think it gets a lot more notice if we’re moving them around,” he said.
Portable electronic traffic warning signs are available only on a limited basis through the Dickinson County Sheriff’s Office, Olson noted.
Mulka said the cost for the EVOLIS units, which includes a Sourcewell cooperative purchasing discount, is “the best price I’ve seen.”
They feature 15-inch speed digits and customizable message displays.
In other action, the township board:
— After reviewing quotes, approved the purchase of a new 2024 Ford F-600 municipal truck with a stainless steel dump box from LaFontaine of Lansing at a cost of $92,904. There is no delivery fee and the township can claim a $4,000 rebate. Quotes were solicited from MiDeal and Sourcewell vendors.
— Reminded residents that the deadline to dispose of tires free of charge at the Dickinson County Solid Waste Processing Facility is Dec. 1 — or until the grant program quota is met. More information is available at https://www.breitungtownshipmi.gov/blog/breitung-township-tire-grant.
— Learned that the installation of street lights along the U.S. 2 corridor near Iron Mountain’s east city limits has been completed. The board earlier this year approved the lights at a cost of $19,685.
— Heard Public Works Superintendent Jason Davis report successful installation of a sprinkler system at the Quinnesec soccer field. Beck’s Ornamental & Turf Management Inc. of Norway was awarded a $77,804 bid for the project in August. The work also includes resurfacing and there will be some follow-up in the spring, Davis said.
— Heard Olson say he’s disappointed that Dickinson County has at least three vacant seats on the 37-member Central Upper Peninsula Planning and Development Regional Commission, or CUPPAD, which also serves Alger, Delta, Marquette, Menominee and Schoolcraft counties. Olson, who represents the Dickinson County Township Association on the regional panel, said he’d like to see Trustee Michael Day appointed. Day is also a member of the Breitung Township Planning Commission. CUPPAD is a planning and development agency that assists local communities in economic and community development and other activities.
