NORWAY — Hundreds of spooky creatures have returned to the Haunted Barn for another scare season.

The ninth-annual event, which is now run by the Friends of the Dickinson County Fair, again takes place in the upper level of the main exhibition building at the Dickinson County fairgrounds, which has been transformed into a haunted pathway.

The barn will be open from 4 to 8 p.m. today and noon to 3 p.m. Sunday.

Additional hours are: 6 to 8 p.m. Friday; 4 to 8 p.m. Saturday, Oct. 25; noon to 3 p.m. Sunday, Oct. 26; and 6 to 8 p.m. Friday, Oct. 31

The Friends of the Dickinson County Fair purchased the entire collection of props and costumes from the original co-creator, Missy Dierkens-Spade and her mother, Mary Dierkens-Clark, after she made the decision to discontinue hosting the event.

“The board discussed it and we thought it would be beneficial; they had done really well with it over the years,” Friends of the Fair Board Secretary Emily Gunville said. “She has also grown it a lot.”

Gunville noted that the proceeds will go toward improvements to the fairgrounds.

“There’s a lot of upkeep to the building and grounds, including a lot of painting,” she said, adding one of their goal projects is to paint the rotunda.

Gunville said for the first year, the Friends are focused on getting the event up and running and will look into changes in the future.

“Displays were left set up from last Halloween,” Gunville said. “Beth (Bray) has been busy replacing batteries before opening night (which was Friday).”

In addition to the haunted house, they will have several photo op areas, an outdoor maze, bonfire and wagon rides.

Several characters will again pop up to greet guests on live prop nights

The Friends have planned to offer small concession items.

All visitors are asked to enter the Haunted Barn at the back of the building, across from the barns.

Cost is $10 for live prop nights and $5 for daytime events.

“We are excited for our first year and hope the community comes out to enjoy the haunted house,” Gunville said.

The Friends still need of volunteers for the event. Anyone wishing to have fun in costume or just helping out during open hours is asked to message them on the Friends of the Dickinson County Fair Facebook page. “They can also just show up during one of the events,” she added.

The Friends will be selling raffle tickets for a basket throughout the entire haunted barn season. They will draw the winners at the end of the season.

Gunville noted that the Friends will accept donated props or items for next year’s event.

“We would include them in our sponsorship of being a Friend of the Fair supporter,” she said.
