Lineman killed in construction zone in Marquette County
SANDS TOWNSHIP — A 25-year-old journeyman lineman from Marquette was killed Monday by a motor vehicle that also struck two trucks in a work zone on M-553 in Marquette County, authorities said.
Marquette County Sheriff’s Office deputies were sent to the construction zone on M-553 near Silver Creek Road in Sands Township, where they found bystanders and other workers already attempting lifesaving measures to the lineman. Despite those efforts, the man was pronounced dead at the site, according to a news release.
His name was later released as Jack Rantanen of Marquette.
The driver was brought to UP Health Systems in Marquette for treatment. No name has been provided, just a description that she is a 48-year-old Gwinn woman.
An investigation determined a passenger vehicle was southbound on M-553 when it left its lane, sideswiping a construction vehicle parked on the shoulder. The vehicle continued southbound, still sideswiping the parked truck and then struck the lineman, according to reports.
A post on the Michigan Occupational Safety and Health Administration’s Facebook page states the lineman was “preparing a jobsite by placing wire for set up. The victim was chaining down a wire reel on a trailer connected to a digger truck about six feet off the road. A vehicle crossed the white edge line, struck the passenger side of a digger truck and struck the victim at the back of the trailer.”
After striking the worker, the vehicle continued southbound and struck a second construction truck, Marquette County Sheriff’s Office officials stated.
M-553 was closed for several hours to allow law enforcement to go over the site of the crash, which remains under investigation.
The Marquette County Sheriff’s Office was assisted on site by the Michigan State Police, the Chocolay Township Police, the Marquette City Police, Northern Michigan University police, the Department of Natural Resources Law Enforcement Division, Sands Township Fire and EMS, Marquette Township Fire, UPHS-Marquette EMS, the Marquette County Road Commission and Marquette Detailing.
