New chief of staff at VA center in IM

IRON MOUNTAIN – Dr. Victor Quijano has been named as the new chief of staff at the Oscar G. Johnson VA Medical Center, effective Oct. 6.

“I am thrilled to welcome Dr. Quijano to our leadership team,” Medical Center Director Dr. John P. Shealey said. “His extensive experience and passion for veteran health care will be invaluable as we continue to enhance our services and provide exceptional care for our nations heroes.”

Quijano joins an executive leadership team that includes Shealey; Associate Medical Center Director Thad Q. Strom and Associate Director Nursing and Patient Care Services Tara Zoeller, RN.

As chief of staff, Quijano oversees all medical staff including physicians, dentists, psychiatrists, psychologists, social workers, physician assistants, nurse practitioners and other specialties. In addition, he supervises support services including radiology, health profession trainee education and credentialing and privileging.

Quijano has more than 22 years of health care experience, eight of which are in leadership roles, both in the Department of Veterans Affairs and the private sector. Prior to this position, he served as deputy chief of staff – hospital services at the VA Eastern Colorado Health Care System. In addition, he previously was chief of surgery in Colorado and chief of podiatry in Portland, Oregon.

“I look forward to work alongside the dedicated staff at OGJVAMC and continue to provide the highest standard of care to veterans,” Quijano said. “In addition to having the opportunity to lead employees as the Chief of Staff, I am also looking forward to working as a clinician and continuing to see podiatry patients in this new role.”

Quijano earned a PhD in molecular endocrinology and Doctor of Podiatric Medicine from Temple University, where he also completed his residency in foot and ankle trauma, and pediatric reconstruction. He is a member of the National Surgery Office and chairperson of the Veterans Affairs Central Office field advisory board for Podiatric Medicine and Surgery.

Oscar G. Johnson VA Medical Center and its eight, community-based outreach clinic locations span the entire Upper Peninsula as well as nine counties in northeastern Wisconsin, serving nearly 22,000 veterans.
