NORWAY — The curtain will go up this weekend on the Norway High School Co-op Drama Club’s fall production, “Baker Street Irregulars.”
Show times are 7 p.m. Saturday and 2 p.m. Sunday at the Fine Arts Center in Norway.
The production takes place in the 1800s and features many unique roles, said co-director Gail Galotta.
“It’s a fun piece that has all the traits of a good mystery, with Sherlock Holmes want-to-bes,” co-director Carol Sundstrom added.
The Baker Street Irregulars, who first appeared in Sir Arthur Conan Doyle’s original Sherlock Holmes story “A Study in Scarlet,” are a group of street urchins who assist Sherlock Holmes in solving crime from time to time. This time around, they may be Scotland Yard’s only hope.

While investigating a mysterious murder at the Wainwright Circus, Sherlock Holmes mysteriously falls gravely ill and is unable to perform his usual duties. Luckily, the Irregulars show up and get the low-down from the circus performers, as well as the circus owner and his daughter.
With their snooping and clever detective work, the Baker Street Irregulars solve the crime and discover the mystery behind Sherlock’s sudden illness.
“It’s a murder mystery, but has a lot of comedy — it’s a ‘Madcap’ kind of show,” Sundstrom said.
When it came to selecting its fall production, both directors wanted to do something that would be fun for the students.
“It also provided a variety of unique roles, including acrobats, clowns, tightrope walkers and animal trainers,” Galotta noted.

She said the costumes added fun to the performance. “It’s not just because they dressed in the 1890s, but they are dressed as these fun characters,” Galotta explained.
The cast is made up of 19 students, along with their stage crew.
The group has been rehearsing since the middle of September.
Sundstrom said the students are really getting into their roles and enjoying the production.
She added they are hoping to do something in the spring.
This is NHS Drama Club’s third year opening up the auditions for other area high school students to take part.
“It gives the kids more of an opportunity to be in theatre in other schools,” Galotta said.
Tickets are $10 for adults, and $5 for students.
“We encourage everyone to come out,” Sundstrom said. “The cast and crew is excited to show you our production of ‘Baker Street Irregulars.'”
The school’s fine art center is at 300 Section St. in Norway.
