Piers Gorge park to close on Michigan side starting Monday

NORWAY — The Menominee River Recreation Area’s Piers Gorge Unit will be closed to the public starting Monday for construction of a new bridge and boardwalk.

The closure, which will extend through Dec. 15, includes the parking lot, walking trail and bike trail, the Michigan Department of Natural Resources said.

The $300,000 project has been funded by a Michigan Natural Resources Trust Fund grant to provide Americans with Disabilities Act access to pier one.

“Construction of the bridge and boardwalk will be the first phase of the project with future improvements coming to the parking lot, trail surfaces and a new ADA accessible viewing platform at pier one,” said Joseph Freiberg, a Michigan DNR Park and Recreation supervisor. “The future improvements are not scheduled and are funding dependent,” he added.

Questions about the project can be directed to Bewabic State Park at 906-875-3324.

There are three units in the Menominee River Recreation Area, including Piers Gorge Unit in the north and the Quiver Falls Unit and Pemene Falls Unit in the south. The park is home to a 17-mile stretch of undeveloped river corridor that straddles the banks of the Menominee River in both Michigan and Wisconsin.

Starting at $3.50/week.
