IRON MOUNTAIN — Studio Edit, a salon opened in June by Taylor Schindler and Ivy Anderson, hopes to be a family-friendly space.
The two have decades of experience working at different local salons — 11 years for Schindler and 18 years for Anderson — but they wanted to have a smaller, more cozy space where children were welcome.
They are both mothers with young children. Anderson has an 8-year-old and a 3-year-old and Schindler has a 4-month-old and an 8-year-old stepson.
“We worked right next to each other,” Anderson said.
“It was a long time coming, where we talked about joining forces at one point,” Schindler said. “I like having my own schedule and my clients feel like they are family coming here now.”

“We both have families with young kids. We both want to be able to do our own thing and come and go as we please, set our own schedules, be able to put family first, but still be able to do what we love too,” Anderson said.
They wanted a unique and different name, Anderson explained. “Since we are in a studio, we decided to call it Studio Edit because it’s kind of like we are editing people’s hair in a sense. And it just flowed and we loved it.”
Although they both have an established client list, they welcome new clients, who are invited to stop into the salon, located in the 400 block of South Stephenson Avenue, below the former Oddfellows Restaurant.
“We do have a full clientele but we can still grow,” Schindler said.
“We don’t ever want to stop that. What if people move away or don’t want to get their hair done as much,” Anderson said.
Schindler loves “doing color and cuts with my feather razor,” whereas “hair color, spray tans and hair extensions” are Anderson’s favorites.
One area they would like to expand is hair extensions. “We definitely want to get into another style,” Schindler said.
“We both have been expressing to each other that we want to grow in the hair extensions world,” Anderson said.
The trend Anderson sees are more simplistic cuts and styles that are easier to take care of and require fewer cuts.
“Male teenagers have definitely expanded their styles,” Schindler said.
They plan to hold a small grand opening during Ladies Night Out on Thursday, Nov. 13, with a drawing for a gift basket.
“People can come and meet us, if they don’t know us already,” Anderson said.
They are open 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. Tuesday through Friday but they can make other accommodations if it fits their schedule. They can be reached through their Facebook page.
