This week’s photo, provided by the Menominee Range Historical Museum, gives a glimpse of what hunting camp looked like in the 1890s.

Hunters posed near the primitive shelter in Florence County, Wis., after what looks to have been a successful hunt.

The buck pole is fastened between two tall trees and about five whitetail deer are visible.

The hindquarters of another deer are shown at the right next to the tree.

The picture was taken by Jorgen Johansen Eskil, a pioneer photographer on the Menominee Iron Range.

Michigan’s firearm white-tailed deer hunting season opened on Nov. 15 and will end Nov. 30. Archery will continue from Dec. 1 through Jan. 1, 2026.

Wisconsin will open its firearm deer hunting Saturday. Archery and crossbow will continue through Jan. 4, 2026.
