Driver dies in crash after fleeing Niagara traffic stop
A man died Wednesday after colliding head-on with a GFL Environmental vehicle while reportedly fleeing a traffic stop in Niagara, Wis., authorities said.
NIAGARA, Wis. — A man died Wednesday afternoon after crashing his truck into a garbage truck on Main Street while fleeing from a Niagara Police officer.
The officer had attempted to do a traffic stop about 1:11 p.m. Wednesday when the other driver took off at high speed and swerved his truck into oncoming traffic in the 1000 block of Main Street, hitting a GFL Environmental vehicle head on, according to reports.
While aid was immediately provided, the man was pronounced dead at the crash site, a news release from the Wisconsin Department of Justice states. The DOJ did not provide a name or other information on the driver.
No one else was injured in the incident.
The DOJ’s Division of Criminal Investigation will investigate the officer-involved death and turn its report over to the Marinette County District Attorney’s Office when completed. The officer will be placed on administrative leave, per the agency’s policies, according to the news release.
The DCI is being assisted in the investigation by the Wisconsin State Patrol, the Marinette County Sheriff’s Office, Niagara Rescue, the Niagara Fire Department and a DCI crime response specialist.
