IRON MOUNTAIN — A speed limit of 15 mph will be posted for a narrow section of the 800 block of West Ludington Street where a century-old retaining wall has been replaced with a new concrete structure.

The city council this week approved a traffic control order drafted by Director of Police and Fire Services Jeff Solka that allows two-way traffic but in some cases requires motorists to yield.

West Ludington splits into two sections in the area of the wall — a north section on top and a lower south section.

Traffic may continue past South Pine Street on the south section. On the north split, West Ludington transitions into South Pine Street and intersects with West Brown Street.

On the south section, at the intersection near South Pine, the road is about 14 feet wide.

“Because this is a low-traffic area, it can remain open for two-way traffic provided that drivers yield when the road is occupied,” Solka said in a memo to the council.

Under the order, signs will be installed stating “Yield to Oncoming Traffic” and “Street Narrows to One Lane.” In addition, a 15 mph speed limit will be posted.

Existing signs on this section of West Ludington will be relocated to the right-hand side of the roadway to improve visibility and compliance, Solka added.

On the the north split, the roadway is about 20 feet wide and will remain a two-way street. However, eastbound traffic will yield to vehicles traveling in both directions on the southern section of West Ludington Street, Solka said.

Also, a stop sign will be installed for traffic on South Pine approaching West Ludington.

Finally, the 800 block of West Ludington will be designated “No Parking” on both the north and south sections through the narrow portions, Solka said.

Bacco Construction Co. of Iron Mountain recently completed a more than $400,000 project to replace the deteriorating stone wall with a precast concrete structure. The work was paid through federal American Rescue Plan Act funds.
