Kingsford fire victim identified

KINGSFORD — The name of a woman who perished in an apartment fire early Saturday morning has been released by the Kingsford Public Safety Department.

The victim has been identified as 33-year-old Katrina Miilu, according to the release. She resided in the lone upstairs apartment.

According to a press release from Kingsford Public Safety, officers on patrol responded to the fire on the second floor of 229 E. Breitung Ave. around 1:26 a.m.

The officers evacuated the three lower apartment units and started extinguishing the fire. Miilu was found inside the upstairs residence.

First responders attempted resuscitation efforts at the scene, but those efforts were unsuccessful, the department said.

The cause of the fire remains under investigation. Kingsford Public Safety is working alongside fire investigators to determine the origin and circumstances surrounding the incident.

Multiple agencies responded to the fire, including DCSO Dispatch, Iron Mountain Fire Department, Integrity Care Ambulance, Dickinson County Sheriff’s Department, Iron Mountain Police Department, WE Energies, DTE and Kingsford Public Works.
