Menominee to limit number of marijuana retail outlets

MENOMINEE — Menominee voters Tuesday overwhelmingly backed capping the number of marijuana retail outlets in the city at nine.

Unofficial results showed 1,429, or 78.04%, voted “yes” to 402, or 21.96%, opposing the proposal.

The vote Tuesday came after Circuit Court Judge Mary Barglind invalidated voters approving the cap in a special election in August, saying Michigan marijuana law requires ballot initiatives be held during the next regular election.

Menominee, on the Michigan-Wisconsin border, has a population of 8,300 people yet eight dispensaries, with two more retail outlets seeking to open.

In Lansing, state lawmakers are considering whether to limit new marijuana business licenses statewide. Under a proposal from state Sen. Sam Singh, D-East Lansing, the number of retail marijuana stores in a given municipality would be capped at no more than one for every 10,000 residents. Existing shops could continue to operate, but there would be no new licenses in any municipality over that ratio.

Iron Mountain, with a population slightly more than 7,500, has two retail businesses — Lume and Rize. City officials recently discussed issuing no new licenses for marijuana growing operations.

Starting at $3.50/week.
