The Wisconsin Department of Justice continues to investigate an officer involved death in Niagara, Wis., and has released the name of the person who died and the name of the officer placed on administrative leave.
At about 1:11 p.m. Nov. 5, Niagara Police Department Officer Rhianna Carne, with two years of law enforcement experience, attempted a traffic stop in the city of Niagara, DOJ said Thursday in a news release.
The subject, 57-year-old Steve Mecklenburg, fled the traffic stop at a high rate of speed and swerved into oncoming traffic in the 1000 block of Main Street, hitting a commercial vehicle, the news release states.
Aid was rendered, but Mecklenburg was pronounced dead. There were no other injuries.
Carne was placed on administrative leave, per the agency’s policies.
DOJ’s Division of Criminal Investigation is leading the investigation and is assisted by Wisconsin State Patrol, Marinette County Sheriff’s Office, Niagara Rescue, Niagara Fire Department and a DCI crime response specialist.
DCI is continuing to review evidence and determine the facts of this incident and will turn over the investigation reports to the Marinette County District Attorney’s Office when the investigation concludes, Attorney General Josh Kaul said in the news release.
