KINGSFORD — The Dickinson County Area Band is getting into the holiday spirit with a free Christmas concert at 2 p.m. Sunday in the Kingsford High School auditorium.

Doors will open at 1:15 p.m. According to Robert Knox, president of the organization, they plan to perform a mix of older and newer Christmas songs.

“We’re trying to find a nice balance,” he said.

It had been a number of years since the band performed a Christmas show before they brought it back last year.

In August 2024, Jacob Barnby, band director at Bruiting Township Schools, said it would be nice to have a holiday concert, and they floated the idea of performing a Christmas show to the other members to see if there was an interest. A number of members said they would perform.

They met that November and had two rehearsals and performed the show in December.

“We had a really good response from the community,” Knox said. Even with weather issues they had a good turnout.

Four conductors will lead the approximately hour-long show: Knox, who serves as middle and high school band director at Florence County Schools; Bri Knox, his wife, who is elementary school music teacher; Barnby; and Logan Galindo, a former director.

The Dickinson County Area Band has been performing for more than 60 years and they perform summer concerts each year in the Lake Antoine band shell. The band has more than 40 members.

Although there is no charge for the show, donations are appreciated.
