Heavy snow predicted for UP starting Sunday

IRON MOUNTAIN — A winter storm watch will be in effect from Sunday afternoon through Monday night, with heavy snow and whiteout conditions possible, the National Weather Service said.

AccuWeather predicts 6 to 10 inches of snow for the Iron Mountain area.

NWS predicts 5 to 13 inches of snow across the Upper Peninsula, with the greatest accumulations across the north half. Winds could gust as high as 45 mph — the strongest near Lake Superior forecasters said.

“Whiteout conditions are possible and may make travel treacherous and potentially life-threatening,” NWS said. “Gusty winds could bring down tree branches, which may cause sporadic power outages.”

In advance of the snow, another round of light freezing rain is possible tonight, forecasters said.

Rain or snow is likely in the Iron Mountain area Sunday, with a high near 35 degrees. As temperatures fall, snow is likely. Monday’s predicted high is 20 degrees.

There is also a chance of snow Tuesday with a high near 18. The forecast for New’s Year Eve, Wednesday, is mostly cloudy with a high of about 13 and a low near zero. New Year’s Day will be mostly sunny and cold with a high near 7, according to NWS.

Starting at $3.50/week.
