Niagara officer cleared in Nov. 5 traffic death

A man died Nov. 5 after colliding head-on with a GFL Environmental vehicle while reportedly fleeing a traffic stop in Niagara, Wis., authorities said.

An investigation into a fatal crash Nov. 5 in Niagara, Wis., has ended with no charges filed against any involved law enforcement.

Steve Mecklenburg, 57, fled a traffic stop at a high rate of speed and swerved into oncoming traffic in the 1000 block of Main Street, hitting a garbage truck head-on, according to the Wisconsin Department of Justice. Aid was rendered, but Mecklenburg was pronounced dead. There were no other injuries.

Niagara police officer Rhianna Carne had tried to stop Mecklenburg’s truck about 1:15 p.m. Nov. 5. In a letter to the DOJ summarizing her decision not to charge Carne, Marinette County District Attorney DeShea Morrow said Carne was responding to a report that Mecklenburg stole the truck. He fled at between 55 and 75 mph, and did a U-turn, according to the police report.

Morrow said that Mecklenburg swerved into oncoming traffic and crashed into a commercial garbage truck that was pulled over to the side of the street.

After the crash, Carne was placed on administrative leave, per DOJ’s policies.

According to Morrow, dash camera footage, the squad video and evidence photos matched Carne’s account of the traffic stop.

DOJ’s Division of Criminal Investigation led an investigation into the crash, assisted by Wisconsin State Patrol, Marinette County Sheriff’s Office, Niagara Rescue, Niagara Fire Department and a DCI crime response specialist.
