Dickinson board to look into other meeting sites
IRON MOUNTAIN — Dickinson County Board may hold some meetings at sites other than the courthouse complex in Iron Mountain, depending on the interest shown in outlying communities.
At a reorganizational meeting Friday, the board adopted a meeting schedule the same as the current one — the second Monday of each month at 6 p.m. in the circuit courtroom of the courthouse. Special meetings are sometimes held in the sheriff’s conference room of the correctional center.
The board, in the past year, has heard suggestions they meet in other communities. On Friday, Controller Brian Bousley said he will look into the availability of other sites, such as community centers in Felch and Sagola townships.
In previous years, the board has had two regular meetings monthly but that has been trimmed to one since June.
Dan Harrington will remain chairman of the board and Peter Swanson will stay as vice chair. Harrington and Swanson were among four commissioners newly elected to four-year terms in November 2024. The others were Victoria Jakel and Kevin Sullivan.
Longtime Commissioner Joe Stevens is the fifth member of the board. All are Republicans.
The switch from two-year county board terms to four-year terms that began with the 2024 election allows the board-chosen chairman to serve at least a two-year term, said Carol Bronzyk, county clerk-register of deeds.
Both Swanson and Stevens were excused from Friday’s session.
In other business, the board in a voice vote adopted a resolution in support of Michigan House Bills 5152 and 5153. The legislation deals with mortgage foreclosures and has support from register of deeds offices across the state, Bronzyk said.
It’s meant, in part, to address a predatory business model that targets vulnerable homeowners in foreclosure by stripping owners of their home equity.
