Ice leads to US 2 mishap, road closure
IRON MOUNTAIN — Icy conditions Tuesday night led a school bus to hit a towing rig on the shoulder of U.S. 2 near Alfredson Road in eastern Dickinson County.
The accident happened just after 8 p.m. when the Choice Transportation bus, despite going at a slow speed, ran into a towing rig that was working to pull out another vehicle that had gone off the road, according to a spokesman for the Dickinson County Sheriff’s Office.
No one was reported injured. The bus was carrying nine people, including the 70-year-old driver, according to the sheriff’s office. It could not be confirmed they were an area sports team.
Both lanes of U.S. 2 had to be shut down for a period of time, the Michigan Department of Transportation stated in an alert.
Conditions were so bad The Daily News could not get newspapers from the printing plant in Powers to the post office to go out with Wednesday’s mail, postponing delivery of that edition until today.
Most area school districts either canceled or delayed classes Wednesday, the second day this week that weather affected students and staff returning after the long holiday break.
