A Menominee man faces several felony charges in Wisconsin’s Marinette County after being accused of carrying a firearm into Peshtigo High School during a blood drive earlier this week and then having an altercation with officers at the jail.
Peshtigo Police officers about 11:43 a.m. Monday received a report of a suspicious male at the high school who was possibly carrying a gun.
According to a news release, a student working at a blood drive at the school described the man as acting “strange” and being overly friendly with her and another female juvenile.
The student said the man also appeared to have a “bulging” item tucked on the side under his shirt that she suspected was a gun. The man stayed longer than normal – approximately an hour or more — after his blood draw was complete, she said.
Peshtigo officers found the man inside the gymnasium. He was then temporarily detained and searched in a private office, the news release stated.
Officers found a handgun loaded with one magazine tucked inside his shirt, plus two knives and one flashlight in his pockets.
The man — identified as Trevor Sterling Salewsky, 33 — was arrested and transported to the Marinette County Jail on several misdemeanor and felony charges. At the jail, Salewsky had somehow managed to get out of his handcuffs without law enforcement’s knowledge and after getting out of the vehicle as if still restrained “attacked and assaulted several officers,” according to the news release.
Officers used Tasers and other jail staff to get Salewsky back into custody.
Charges filed Thursday in Marinette County Circuit Court include: possession of firearm on school grounds, a felony; two counts of possession of dangerous weapon at school, a misdemeanor; resist officer — substantial bodily harm/soft tissue injury, a felony; attempt disarming a peace officer, a felony; battery to certain individuals involved with a court or legal system, a felony; theft-movable property -$2,500, a misdemeanor; and disorderly conduct, a misdemeanor.
Salewsky was listed online at the Oconto County Jail pending further court proceedings.
Peshtigo High School students and staff were temporarily locked down during the incident but later resumed school operations. The school released a memo to all parents as notification, as well as a news release.
