Niagara school to host MLK Day program
NIAGARA, Wis. — The Niagara School District will have its 10th-annual commemoration of Martin Luther King Jr. Day on Monday, Jan. 19, in the auditorium of the school, 700 Jefferson Ave. in Niagara.
Two identical programs will be presented: 11:32 a.m.-12:01 p.m. for middle school students and 12:04-12:36 p.m. for high school students. The public is invited to attend either program.
The programs will be presented by a group of Niagara High School student volunteers. This year’s theme is, “Building the Beloved Community.” There will be experiential learning, documentary film, drama, art and video shot right at the school. The students and others who attend will be encouraged to help build “the beloved community” in their daily lives. The “dream,” the task, and the promise lives on.
Martin Luther King Jr. did not only seek justice and equality for Black people. He and the civil rights movement sought to build “the beloved community,” in which people of every color and creed would be respected and valued. But what would “the beloved community” actually look like in our own friendship circles, schools, neighborhoods, workplaces, cities and towns? That question will be explored on the upcoming Martin Luther King Jr. national holiday.
