FLORENCE, Wis. — The Silent Sporters of Upper Michigan & Northern Wisconsin is a group dedicated to creating non-motorized experiences in nature.

They recently released their schedule of activities through April 25. On Saturday they plan a snowshoe event at LaSalle Falls in Florence County hosted by Catherine Vivio, a long-time member.

The club is a group of people who like to hike, snowshoe and kayak in different areas of the Upper Peninsula and northern Wisconsin, Vivio said. They have been in existence for about 25 years.

The informal group meets in October and again March to map out events for the next six months, letting the public know their plans. Only during COVID-19 did they limit activities and even then had some events using proper protection.

“It’s a great group. There are no officers. If you propose a trip, you are in charge but if something happens and you can’t attend, someone else takes over,” Vivio said.

The size of the outings can vary, with sometimes just a handful of people attending and sometimes many more, she said.

One of her favorite place to go is Whisker Lake Wilderness Area — a quiet, out-of-the-way place about 11 miles west of Florence. They plan an outing there Jan. 24.

Because of the unpredictability of the weather, Vivio asks those interested in participating in events email her at catherinevivio@gmail.com to get on the email list. A snowshoe trip had been planned for this past Saturday, but rain made the trail conditions too difficult so it was canceled.

She sends out information about each upcoming event on Wednesday or Thursday, including where the group will be meeting. Vivio can be texted as well at 906-282-7309.
