8 days to the ski jumps
Olympic ski jumper Art Devlin takes flight at the 1940 Pine Mountain Ski Jumping tournament. At age 17, Devlin earned a spot on the U.S. Olympic team for the 1940 that were to take place in Japan. However, due to Japan’s involvement in World War II, the 1940 games were canceled. He did go on to compete in the 1952 and 1956 Olympics and did qualify for the 1960 team; however, due to injuries he decided to give up his spot. This year’s FIS Continental Cup tournament at Pine Mountain is set for Feb. 20-22, featuring a field of 40 or more skiers from eight nations. Admission buttons are available at numerous locations in Dickinson County, or online at www.kiwanisskiclub.com. Sanford Health Marshfield Clinic is the title sponsor.
