Florence man dies after medical event causes crash

FLORENCE, Wis. — A Florence man has died after having a medical event while driving on U.S. 2 in the town of Florence and striking the back of another vehicle.

The collision was reported about 7:06 p.m. Saturday on U.S. 2 and North Lake Road, according to the Florence County Sheriff’s Office.

The investigation revealed a vehicle operated by 85-year-old Frank Bilsky was eastbound when it ran into the back of a vehicle driven by 61-year-old Amy Klemp of Florence, who was legally attempting to turn onto North Lake Road, a news release states.

Bilsky apparently had a medical event before the collision. Deputies and Florence County EMS performed lifesaving efforts before Bilsky was airlifted by Aspirus MedEvac to Wausau Aspirus Hospital, where he later died from the medical condition, according to the sheriff’s office.

Klemp was treated on site and released.

The Florence County Sheriff’s Office was assisted by Florence County EMS, Florence County Emergency Management, Florence Fire Department, Aspirus MedEvac, Northwoods Auto, Edwards Automotive Towing and Bigfoot Liquors providing a landing zone.

“We send our deepest condolences to the family that lost a loved one,” the department stated in the news release.
