One person dead, four injured in UP crash

A 38-year-old Rapid River woman was killed and four people — including three children — were injured in a crash involving a pickup truck and a semi-truck during whiteout conditions Friday night on U.S. 2 in Schoolcraft County, Michigan State Police said.

The woman, a front seat passenger in the pickup truck, was pronounced dead at the crash site near County Road 442 in Inwood Township, according to MSP.

A rear seat passenger sustained serious injuries and was transported to Schoolcraft Memorial Hospital, then flown by Guardian Flight to Children’s Wisconsin hospital in Milwaukee. Another passenger was taken to UP Health Systems in Marquette for treatment of a head injury, MSP said in a news release.

The driver of the pickup truck and one passenger were taken to Schoolcraft Memorial Hospital for treatment of injuries believed to be minor. The driver of the semi-truck was not injured.

Troopers from the Manistique post said the pickup truck was westbound on U.S. 2 at about 9:15 p.m. and trying to pass a vehicle in the passing lane during whiteout conditions on icy roads. Preliminary investigation shows the pickup truck crossed into the path of the eastbound semi-truck.

Drugs and alcohol are not believed to be factors in the crash, which remains under investigation, MSP said.

Assisting were state police from the Gladstone post, the MSP Aviation Unit, MSP dispatchers, Inwood Township Fire Department, Garden Township Fire Department, TriStar EMS and the Manistique Public Safety Department.
