Marquette authorities Wednesday suspended their search for a missing Northern Michigan University student last seen early Sunday looking disoriented and having difficulty walking in downtown Marquette.
In a news release posted late Wednesday afternoon on Facebook, Marquette Police said additional surveillance camera footage had shown 21-year-old Trenton Massey walking to the area of the Founder’s Landing Boardwalk early Sunday, then about 3:35 a.m. going out onto the Lake Superior ice from the north landing pier before disappearing from camera view.
Marquette Police also revealed Massey’s cell phone was turned in about 8 a.m. Eastern time Sunday after being found on the city multi-use path between UP Health System-Marquette and the McDonald’s restaurant on Washington Street.
“Contact was made with a family member who advised they would notify Massey of the found phone. At approximately 1:30 p.m. the Marquette Police Department received a report from that same family member that Massey had not been heard from and was missing,” the department stated in the latest release.
The decision to halt the efforts “pending new information” came on the fourth day of searching for Massey, a construction management student from Laingsburg in downstate Michigan.

MPD said the search was done on land, ice, from the air and underwater, using such resources as scuba divers, sonar, aerial drones, underwater remote-operated vehicles, K-9s, hovercraft, airboat and helicopter. The search area encompassed the Founder’s Landing area, downtown Marquette, ice and water of the lower harbor, the city multi-use path, Mattson Lower Harbor Park and neighborhoods west of Front Street, according to the news release.
Those involved in the search, according to MPD, included the Marquette County Sheriff’s Office, Marquette County Sheriff’s Office Search and Rescue, Northern Michigan University Police Department, Michigan State Police K-9s and Marine Services Team, Marquette City Fire Department, U.S. Coast Guard Station Marquette, U.S. Army, Michigan Department of Natural Resources conservation officers, Alger County Sheriff’s Office, No One Left Behind K9 Search and Rescue, Northern Michigan University, Frontline Strong and numerous volunteers. Multiple area businesses also assisted by providing locations for searchers to warm up, along with food, drink and transportation.
“The Marquette Police Department would like to thank our partner agencies and volunteers for helping us during this unfortunate situation,” the news release states.
The investigation remains ongoing, according to the MPD, which added that while volunteer search efforts can continue people “should be mindful of private property and stay off the ice.”
City officials had earlier warned about the unsafe ice conditions after an adult male had to be rescued from the water in Lower Harbor on Feb. 11 and another person fell through a week earlier while ice skating, though that person was able to get out unassisted.
