Seasonal road restrictions expected to start soon

IRON MOUNTAIN — Businesses that involve truck deliveries and services are being advised to adjust their schedules as annual seasonal road weight restrictions draw near.

The Dickinson County Road Commission warned that once restrictions are in effect, county road use will be limited for large trucks used for delivering building materials, concrete, well drilling, septic pumping, dumpsters and more.

County road commissions put in place their own seasonal weight restrictions, which usually, but not always, coincide with the Michigan Department of Transportation’s state highway weight restrictions. Signs are generally posted to indicate which routes have weight restrictions in effect.

When roads that have been frozen all winter begin to thaw from the surface downward, melting snow and ice saturate the softened ground. During the spring thaw, the roadbed softened by trapped moisture beneath the pavement makes it more susceptible to damage. This contributes to pothole problems due to freeze-thaw cycles.

In 2025, the Michigan DOT and the Dickinson County Road Commission put spring weight restrictions in place on March 10.
