KINGSFORD — Sixteen families are participating so far in the Hometown Heroes Banner Program, the Kingsford City Council learned this week.

Signups to honor military veterans will be taken until March 31. Banners will be on display from Memorial Day weekend through Labor Day weekend for the next three years.

Any families that sign up after March 31 will be displayed in the years 2027, 2028 and 2029. After the banners have been displayed for three years, they can be returned to the sponsor.

For more information, contact City Hall or go to https://www.kingsfordmi.gov/DocumentCenter/View/577/Kingsford-Heroes-Banner-Program-Application-fillable?bidId=.

The cost is $225 for a 30-by-60-inch, full-color vinyl banner. The city has set a goal of 30 banners.

In other action Monday, the council:

— Approved the retirement of a public service officer after 24 years. The name of the officer was not released on his request. They will be advertising for a replacement.

— Approved a change order for sewer water project No. 2 for rehabilitation work on well No. 5. When the well was taken out and inspected it was found to need more rehabilitation work than was originally planned, City Manager Mike Stelmaszek said.

— Learned the city is looking at software vendors to maintain ADA Compliance requirements for its digital content within web services.

— Heard the city has implemented a positive pay service agreement with First National Bank & Trust, in which they will now post checks with the bank, so they can be cross-referenced with the original. This prevents checks from being intercepted, cleaned of information and posted for higher amounts to a different person thereby reducing potential fraud, according to Stelmaszek.

— Approved a request to send Treasurer Holly Palmer to the Michigan Municipal Treasurers Association Advanced Institute May 11-13 in Midland. The cost for the training is $379 and three nights in a hotel. The training will allow her to earn 10 credits toward her MiCPT and CPFA certifications.
