NEWBERRY — A snowmobiler in Luce County had to be rescued after becoming stranded during the snowstorm Monday evening.
During the early evening hours of Monday, Chippewa County Central Dispatch received calls and text messages from an individual who was stuck near Trail 8 in an open area by the Little Two Hearted River, west of Little Lake Harbor.
The Luce County Sheriff’s Office requested assistance from the Michigan Department of Natural Resources Law Enforcement Division. A DNR conservation sergeant, along with additional eastern Upper Peninsula conservation officers, responded on snowmobiles. The team staged at County Road 500 and proceeded toward the GPS coordinates provided by dispatch.
A search party consisting of six sheriff’s office personnel and DNR officers encountered significant obstacles, including complete roadway blockages caused by large snow drifts along M-123 North and County Road 500.
They reached the stranded individual late in the evening and safely transported the person to the County Road 500 staging area to warm up.
The Luce County Sheriff’s Office extended appreciation to the Michigan DNR and the dispatchers at Chippewa County Central Dispatch for their assistance in the rescue.
