GOODMAN, Wis. — The public can witness, from tree to table, how maple sap becomes the beloved sweet treat at the fifth-annual Sappy Days: A Wisconsin Maple Syrup Experience on Friday through Sunday in the Goodman and Armstrong Creek, Wis., area.

Visitors will have the opportunity to tour local sugar camps, watch sap being collected and boiled down and learn about the traditions of the region’s heritage.

“This family-friendly weekend is packed with delicious food, local shopping, and unique maple syrup experiences,” event organizer Lynn Stankevich said. “There is something for everyone to enjoy.”

A spaghetti dinner, hosted by the Goodman-Armstrong Creek Fire Department, will kick off the three-day celebration. The meal will be served from 4 to 7:15 p.m. Friday at the Armstrong Creek Community Center.

“It’s the perfect way to start a sweet weekend while supporting a great local cause,” she said.

A full day of activities is slated for Saturday.

A highlight of the weekend is the chance to tour area sugar camps from noon to 5 p.m.

Stankevich noted that guests can walk through the woods, see sap collection in action, and learn how maple syrup production ranges from small family operations to larger commercial businesses.

Participating sugar camps include —

— Fence, Wis.: Hedmark’s Maple Ridge, 6748 Lunds Road.

— Goodman: Jeff Nooyen’s Sugar Hill, N20123 County H; Flannery’s, W16084 Twin Lake Road; Snowshoe Maples, N18926 Snowshoe Road, and Stonewall Sugar Bush, W16020 Highway 8; and

— Blackwell, Wis.: Northwoods Unicorn, 764 Moonlight Lane.

Attendees can tour the processing operation at Lumberjack Maple Syrup Co., although the tree tapping is off site. Those interested in visiting the wooded area can meet at the sugar house and escorts will guide them. They will leave each hour, starting at 12:30 until 4:30 p.m.

Those wishing for a sap cooking time can inquire at each individual operation.

Maple syrup will be available for sampling and purchase, along with a variety of maple-infused treats, Stankevich said.

She recommends guests dress appropriately for the weather, as well as the snowy and muddy woods.

Throughout the three-day event, local Goodman and Armstrong Creek businesses will feature specials and promotions with a maple flair.

Along with syrup available to sample and purchase, they will have maple-inspired foods and beverages such as beer, root beer, bourbon, desserts and more.

“The public is invited to stop in and explore everything local businesses have to offer,” she said. “They will also be giving away door prizes.”

Participants include the Armstrong Creek Pub, The White House, The Little White Fence, 8-Hi, The Club Roof Saloon, The Green Shack, Stoney Ridge Restaurant and The Second Chance Resale.

Activities will continue Sunday with the Sappy Days Market, pancake breakfast, bag toss tournament and bingo.

The Goodman-Armstrong Creek Lions Club will sponsor a free pancake and porkie breakfast featuring local maple syrup from 8 a.m. to noon at the Armstrong Creek Community Center.

The Sappy Days Market will also be open during the breakfast with a large variety of local crafts and maple products available for purchase.

The cornhole tournament will follow the breakfast at the community center. Registration begins at 11:30 a.m., with an entry fee of $30 per team. All entry fees will be donated to the local fire department and rescue squad.

Prizes were provided by Millan’s Custom Butchering, Stankevich said.

Bingo starts at 1 p.m. at the 8-Hi Club in Goodman. A portion of the card sales will be donated to the departments.

Stankevich encourages everyone to come out and experience the unique products the local communities have to offer.

The event is free; however, event organizers accept donations and the money raised goes to the Goodman-Armstrong Creek Fire Department and Rescue Squad.
