Flood watch heightens in region

Showers and possibly a thunderstorm are in tonight’s forecast, with up to a half-inch of rain possible in the Iron Mountain area, the National Weather Service said.

The Upper Peninsula is under a marginal risk for severe thunderstorms tonight, forecasters said.

Meanwhile, a flood watch remains in place for all of the region through Wednesday morning, due to rain and snowmelt.

“Ponding of water in low-lying and poor drainage areas are being seen,” NWS advised. “Excessive runoff may result in flooding of rivers, creeks, streams, and other low-lying and flood-prone locations.”

As of Sunday night, between 2 and 4 inches of rain had fallen since Saturday in portions of Delta, Dickinson and Menominee counties, NWS said.

Minor flooding of the Menominee River near Florence, Wis., was anticipated as the river was expected to rise above flood stage this morning and continue rising to a crest of 10.7 feet early Wednesday morning. At 10 feet, floodwaters reach a few homes and cottages along Runbers Road, NWS said.

In Niagara, Wis., the Menominee River is expected to rise to a crest of 14.5 feet Wednesday morning. At that level, water begins to cover the Niagara boat landing on Tyler Road and water approaches homes along Sherman Street, forecasters said.

Near Vulcan in Dickinson County, the Menominee River may rise to a crest of 17.5 feet Wednesday morning. At 17 feet, structures along Homestead Road and Sturgeon Way Road may start to be impacted.

Daily high temperatures in the 60s are predicted this week, along with a chance of rain every day.

The weekend may be cooler, with highs in the 40s. On Saturday night there is a chance of rain — or even snow — as temperatures could fall to around 28.
