Local judicial race on ballot in Florence, Forest counties

Forest County’s district attorney and a longtime Crandon attorney with past experience as both a DA and judge will square off Tuesday in a circuit court judgeship race in Florence and Forest counties.

Voters in the two counties will choose a successor to Judge Leon Stenz, who is retiring after serving since 2008.

The candidates for the judgeship are Robert A. Kennedy Jr., who ran unsuccessfully against Stenz in 2014, and Alex Seifert.

Kennedy is a past Florence County district attorney for one term and a past Florence-Forest circuit court judge for one term. He began his 46-year legal career in private practice in Crandon, Wis.

Kennedy is a graduate of the University of Wisconsin-Oshkosh and the University of Wisconsin Law School.

Seifert is the elected district attorney for Forest County. A 13-year military veteran, his legal experience includes two years as assistant corporation counsel for Forest County and working in the Wisconsin State Public Defender’s Office.

Seifert joined the Forest County District Attorney’s Office as an assistant DA in 2020 and was appointed DA in April 2024 by Gov. Tony Evers. He was elected to the position in November 2024, running as an Independent.

Seifert is a graduate of the University of Wisconsin-Stevens Point and Cooley Law School.

School board and county supervisor elections are also on the ballot in Florence County.

Shawn McLain, an incumbent, is the lone candidate for a Florence County School District board seat.

Incumbents on the Florence County Board of Supervisors who are unopposed on the ballot include Chad Hedmark in District 2, Henry Sullivan in District 4, Charles Kellstrom in District 6, Joseph Mills in District 7, Tom Brandt in District 9, Matt Brunette in District 10 and Chase Erickson in District 12.

Tiffany White is the lone candidate in District 3, where Karen Thompson is the incumbent.

Sample ballots offered by the Wisconsin Elections Commission list no candidates in District 1, where Sherry Johnson is the incumbent; in District 5, where Dwaine Drewa is the incumbent; in District 8, listed by the county as vacant; and in District 11, where Fran Modschiedler is the incumbent.

In 2024, there were no candidates on the ballot in Districts 3, 4 and 8. Sullivan was elected in District 4 as a write-in while Thompson was later named to represent District 3.
