Menominee River flood warnings continue on both sides of border

A flood warning continues for the Menominee River in areas of Florence and Niagara in Wisconsin and Breitung Township and Vulcan in Michigan, the National Weather Service said.

Meanwhile, a major roadway has already been affected in Menominee and Delta counties.

In Powers, the Michigan Department of Transportation on Tuesday afternoon said both eastbound and westbound U.S. 2 was entirely closed due to water over the roadway. A detour on local streets was in place, said MDOT’s Dan Weingarten, communications representative for the region.

Menominee County officials declared a state of emergency Tuesday “due to sustained widespread and severe damage to public infrastructure caused by severe flooding in Menominee County.”

The declaration added, “Numerous roads and stream crossings in the county have been severely damaged or destroyed, and conditions are expected to worsen over the next 24-48 hours posing an additional severe and imminent threat to public and private infrastructure.”

Officials advised that “dams located on the Menominee River likely need to open additional gates to manage the flow of water. This may result in the rapid rise of water levels and flow in a very short period of time.”

They warned residents not to try to wade or drive through flooded areas.

On U.S. 41 at U.S. 2 near Rapid River, “we have alternating lanes of traffic under flag control due to water over the roadway,” Weingarten reported.

Also, runways at the Delta County Airport were closed to air traffic after experiencing what Airport Manager Ashleigh Young considers an “unprecedented combination of rapid snowmelt” from the recent blizzard and heavy rainfall.

Young said in some areas of the airport’s runways, water levels range from a few inches to approximately one foot.

“While our drainage system is designed to handle standard precipitation, the sheer volume of runoff from the record-breaking snowfall has exceeded the system’s capacity,” Young said.

The flood warning for the Menominee River extends through the weekend, as there is a chance of rain tonight and again Friday night and Saturday.

A flood warning for the Brule River near Commonwealth, Wis., was also in effect.

“Motorists should not attempt to drive around barricades or drive cars through flooded areas,” forecasters advised.

Gov. Gretchen Whitmer declared a state of emergency Friday at the Cheboygan Lock and Dam Complex as record snowfall in March and the recent rain have elevated water levels.

More pumps were being added to help push water toward Lake Huron on Monday.

In addition to the Cheboygan Dam, state engineers were monitoring at least a half-dozen other dams as waters rise across northern Lower Michigan, Michigan State Police said.

In Cheboygan, a section of the city was evacuated following a levee breach in the Little Black River Watershed, separate from rising waters behind the Cheboygan Dam, Bridge Michigan reported.
