Norway Spring Classic date and route set for April 25

NORWAY — The 45th-annual Norway Spring Classic races will take place Saturday, April 25, over a slightly different route.

The event this year will start and end in the Norway-Vulcan Schools parking lot. In past years the race started near the Dickinson County Library Solomonson branch, though it still ended in the school parking lot.

The event, which starts at 10 a.m., will include a 2-mile run as well as a 5K and 10K — both of which will be part of the Run the U.P. Challenge. Those who take part in the challenge must run at least five events of the 12 races listed.

Race officials also requested the Norway City Council authorize placing barricades or cones at certain intersections along the race route, including Fourth Avenue and Chestnut Street, Fourth Avenue and Section Street and on Section Street at the intersections of Third and Second avenues.

In other business, the council April 1 —

— Approved a five-year agreement with Charter Spectrum for direct fiber to the City Hall and a 12-month contract for coaxial connections operating the city’s Supervisory Control and Data Acquisition, or SCADA, system. This short-term contract would give the city time to incorporate these facilities into the city’s fiber ring, according to City Manager Dan Stoltman. Once that is complete, Spectrum services for those locations would no longer be necessary.

— Passed a resolution marking National Lineman Appreciation Day on April 18. The resolution acknowledges that men and women who work as linemen are often the first responders during storms and other catastrophic events and work with thousands of volts of electricity high atop power lines, often under dangerous conditions.

— Also passed a resolution honoring Arbor Day on April 24, as part of the city’s Urban Forestry Program and Tree City USA status.

— Approved a resolution for National Water Week May 3-9. The week was set aside more than 40 years to recognize the important role clean water plays, to inform citizens on safe drinking water practices and provide tips on water conservation and safety. In a memo to the council, it was also pointed out that even in the water-rich area of the Great Lakes region, protecting area water sources and the Great Lakes are of vital importance.

— Supported a request by the League of American Bicyclists to recognize National Bike Month in May, National Bike Week May 11-17 and National Bike Day on May 15. National Bike Month was established in 1956 and annually designates the third week and third Friday as Bike Week and Day, respectively. The council also backed Bike & Roll to School Day on May 6.
