Update: Boy killed in Ironwood area struck by vehicle

IRONWOOD — A 2-year-old boy who died early March 19 was struck by a vehicle after leaving a nearby residence in Ironwood Township without family members being aware, according to the Gogebic County Sheriff’s Office.

The ongoing investigation has determined the traffic incident happened between 4 and 4:41 a.m. at the intersection of Lake and Sunset roads in Ironwood Township, when Darwin Olson went into Lake Road and was struck by a northbound vehicle, an update from the sheriff’s department stated.

The vehicles that were traveling northbound near the time of the incident have been identified, with their operators continuing to cooperate with the investigation, according to the update.

The area of Lake and Sunset roads were closed for about nine hours to bring in additional traffic crashes and lab experts to process the scene.

Investigators from the sheriff’s office and Michigan State Police have been collaborating with the Gogebic County Prosecutor’s Office, Michigan State Police Forensics, Michigan State Police Crash Reconstructionist and the Midwest Medical Examiner’s Office.

The incident is an active and ongoing investigation, the sheriff’s department states in the update, adding further details will be released pending completion of the investigation.
