Weight limits lifted on some Michigan state roads
The Michigan Department of Transportation continues to adjust spring weight restriction areas in an annual move to protect roads.
Effective 7 a.m. today, weight restrictions will be lifted on all state trunkline highways from the southern Michigan border north to and including U.S.2/U.S. 141 at the Menominee River bridge west of Iron Mountain, then east on U.S. 2 to St. Ignace, north on I-75 to M-134, then east to and including M-134 on Drummond Island.
Additionally, restrictions will be lifted on all of M-149 in Schoolcraft County from U.S. 2 to the terminus of M-149, and on M-185, Mackinac Island.
Frost restrictions are still in effect and will be imposed and enforced on all state trunkline highways north of the U.S. 2 and M-134 line, except for M-149 and Drummond and Mackinac islands. State routes typically carry M, I or US designations.
MDOT determines when weight restrictions begin each spring by measuring frost depths along state highways, observing road conditions and monitoring weather forecasts. Weight restrictions remain in effect until the frost line is deep enough to allow moisture to escape and the roadbeds regain stability.
County road commissions and city public works departments put in place their own seasonal weight restrictions, which usually but not always coincide with state highway weight restrictions. Signs are generally posted to indicate which routes have weight restrictions in effect.

The Wisconsin Department of Transportation effective today is ending posted road restrictions for northern Wisconsin. County highways, town roads, city and village streets may also be posted or limited to legal load limits or less. Decisions to place or lift weight restrictions on those roads are up to local units of government.
