Hancock man reportedly drowns in Lake Superior
HOUGHTON COUNTY — The body of a 57-year-old Hancock was recovered Wednesday morning after an apparent drowning in Hancock Township.
Michigan State Police from the Calumet post responded about 9:30 a.m. Wednesday to a report of a body in Lake Superior near McLain State Park and the breakwall leading to the Keweenaw Waterway Upper Entrance Lighthouse.
Houghton County Sheriff’s Office divers later managed to find the body. A preliminary investigation indicates it was an accidental drowning, with no foul play suspected, according to authorities, although an investigation continues.
While law enforcement had yet to release a name, a statement sent to the Daily Mining Gazette of Houghton from the Memorial Chapel Funeral and Cremation Service-Hancock Chapel indicated 57-year-old Daniel Carlson of Hancock “unexpectedly passed away on Wednesday, June 3, 2026, from an apparent drowning accident.”
MSP was assisted by the Houghton County Sheriff’s Office, Michigan Department of Natural Resources, U.S. Coast Guard and Mercy EMS.
