Kayaker’s body found after bay search near Menominee

MENOMINEE — An individual who failed to return Friday evening while kayaking in Lake Michigan was found dead overnight near Menominee.

The Menominee Police Department received a report of an overdue kayaker about 7:37 p.m. Friday.

The person had launched into Green Bay near Veterans Memorial Park that morning and had not returned as expected, according to a news release.

The department’s search — which included officers on foot, drones and marine vessels — turned up the kayak at 11:46 p.m. Friday washed ashore about 1 mile north of Veterans Memorial Park.

About 35 minutes later, the Menominee Fire Department’s rescue boat found the individual submerged several hundred yards offshore early Saturday.

While the incident remains under investigation, foul play is not suspected at this time, the Menominee Police news release stated.

The kayaker’s name was being withheld pending confirmation that next of kin were notified, according to the release. On Monday, authorities declined to release the identity of the deceased.

Assisting the Menominee Police Department were Menominee County 911, Marinette Police Department, Menominee County Sheriff’s Office, Menominee Fire Department, Marinette Fire Department, Michigan Department of Natural Resources, U.S. Coast Guard and Marinette County Medical Examiner’s Office.
