A rare 1909 photograph provided by the Menominee Range Historical Museum documents a glimpse into everyday life in the community of Hardwood. The image shows the hotel and saloon that once served as a center of activity in the small settlement during the early 20th century.

The postcard, identified as “Hardwood, Mich.,” shows a team and wagon stopped in front of the hotel and saloon. Posing are Axel Pearson and John Anderson, along with three other local men: bartender Jack McKaskel, Andrew Johnson and Emanuel Peronto.

In 1905, Martin Coonan operated a hotel in the community, while Henry Charlebois ran a saloon.

By 1907, Joseph Felardeau was managing a hotel and saloon, and Joseph Kelly was operating another saloon in the area.

At the time the postcard was taken in 1909, the hotel and saloon shown was likely operated by Fred La Duke, who was listed as running both establishments that year.

Local saloon owner Alex Beachthel was also conducting business in Hardwood at the time.

The property changed hands again within a few years. By 1911, Albert Reacek had become proprietor of the hotel and saloon.

Another businessman in the community, Archie P. Farrell, operated a hotel and saloon in Hardwood from 1907 until approximately 1919.

The hotel and saloon were later destroyed by fire, bringing an end to a landmark that had served travelers, workers and local residents in the early years.
