Contractor selected for 2027 Kingsford water line project

KINGSFORD — Oberstar Inc. of Marquette will be hired to replace approximately 320 residential water service lines in Kingsford at the recommendation of project engineers GEI Consultants of Kingsford.

Oberstar will replace service lines south of Breitung Avenue — commonly known as the Breitung area — as part of Drinking Water State Revolving Fund project No. 4. The cost is estimated at $5,461,157. The work is expected to start next year.

In other business, the council Monday:

— Agreed to have a hearing Aug. 3 to establish a Residential Block Re-Development Attainable Housing Facility Act Program Zone for the area around Breitung Avenue The program provides a tax incentive to owners of rental housing property of not more than four units to enable renovation and expansion of aging facilities and assist in the building of new facilities.

— Learned that John Holland of Michigan Rural Water Association was at City Hall on June 29 to review information to prepare a new sewer and water rate study.

— Approved a request to send Treasurer Holly Palmer for Michigan Certified Assessing Technician training in Negaunee on Aug. 27-28 and for the test for certification Aug. 31. This will allow her to assist the city’s assessor in performing his job duties, according to City Manager Mike Stelmaszek. Palmer will be able help the public if they have questions and the assessor is not in the office. They like to have employees cross-trained to cover other employees, Stelmaszek added.

— Approved a request by Todd Dooley for fireworks at Lodal Park during Flivverfest on Saturday, July 25. This is an annual request and he has proof of insurance.

— Approved a variance request at 745 Cass Ave. to allow for construction of a garage and fence closer to the roadway than allowed by city ordinance. There were about 40 letters sent out to surrounding neighbors and only one reply, and they supported the construction. A hold harmless agreement will be required by the city.

— Scheduled an Aug. 3 hearing for a variance request at 200 Parkway Ave.
