A U.S. Department of Veterans grant will help Michigan construct a new 108-bed veterans nursing home in Marquette Township.

The department Tuesday announced it has awarded the state more than $63 million in grant funding to assist with upgrades of state-operated veterans nursing homes.

The current Michigan Veteran Homes D.J. Jacobetti on Fisher Street in Marquette — one of only three such homes in the state — is slated to close at the end of 2027. All of its operations will be moved to the new facility being built in Marquette Township.

In a news release, VA Under Secretary for Health John Bartrum said the federal funding is part of construction and renovation grants awarded through the State Home Construction Grant Program. A collaboration between VA and state governments, this program supports construction and renovation of State Veterans Homes to provide affordable, long-term nursing and domiciliary care for veterans and their spouses.

“VA’s ongoing support of State Veterans Homes reaffirms our commitment to providing veterans at all stages of life with the care and dignity they have earned,” Bartrum said. “These funds will support much-needed upgrades to Michigan’s 45-year-old facility and help ensure the comfort and safety of its residents.”

SVHs — which are owned, operated, and managed by state governments — are designed to enhance quality of life with a clean, caring, and dignified setting.

Plans for a new facility began more than two years ago as Michigan Veteran Homes entered into an agreement with a private seller to acquire 38-plus acres of land in Marquette Township.

As reported by The Mining Journal in Marquette, the property is south of Marquette Cinemas and east of Wright Street and includes acres donated in honor of the property owner’s late father, U.S. Army veteran Edward F. Scott.

Ground was broken for construction of the MVH D.J. Jacobetti replacement home in May 2025.

The city of Marquette is exploring potential residential uses for the site where the Michigan Veteran Homes D.J. Jacobetti currently stands.

Starting at $4.00/week.
