IRON MOUNTAIN — The fundraising chairman for the annual fireworks display at Millie Hill has been recognized by Iron Mountain City Council for making the event a cornerstone of the community’s celebration of Independence Day.
Michael Laydon of Sons of American Legion Squadron 50 has led efforts to raise donations of more than $350,000 since 2007.
A resolution presented Monday by Mayor Dale Alessandrini cites Laydon’s “extraordinary commitment, leadership and dedication.” The council’s resolution also thanks Laydon for his “steadfast support” in helping coordinate the show.
Laydon, in turn, thanked area firefighters, municipal workers, fellow Legion group members, individual contributors and others who come together to make the show possible each year.
In addition to the city’s resolution, the Sons of American Legion presented a fireworks plaque to Laydon in appreciation of his work the past 20 years.
