A county-wide millage renewal for advanced life support ambulance services is on Tuesday's primary election ballot in Iron County, along with a West Iron County School District sinking fund levy and several other millage renewals across the county.
In Hematite Township, a five-year millage of up to 5 mills, or $5 per $1,000 of taxable value, is proposed for roads. The proposed millage would begin in 2027 and raise an estimated $123,056 in the first year. The levy would provide revenues for maintaining and improving the township's road system.
The proposed Iron County ambulance millage is a renewal of 1 mill, or $1 per $1,000 of taxable value, for four years. The levy would raise an estimated $762,981 in 2026.
Also proposed county-wide is the renewal of 0.5 mills, or 50 cents per $1,000 of taxable value, for the operation and improvement of Camp Ba-ta-wa-ga-ma. The levy would raise an estimated $381,490 in 2027 for the youth camp on Indian Lake.
With a previously approved sinking fund millage for the West Iron County School District expiring this year, the district is seeking a levy not to exceed 0.85 mills, or 85 cents per $1,000 for 10 years beginning in 2027. It would raise about $332,830 in the first year.
The school millage is for such purposes as the repair or construction of buildings, security improvements, technology and student transportation. The expiring sinking fund levy is 0.8367 mills, or just under 84 cents per $1,000 of taxable value, which is slightly less than the 0.85-mill annual levy first approved in 2026
Also on Tuesday's ballot is a four-year renewal of 0.5 mills, or 50 cents per $1,000 of taxable value, for the Windsor Recreation Authority. The levy supports The Windsor Center in Iron River, which provides both adult and youth recreation programs.
In 2027 the levy would raise an estimated $39,639 in Bates Township, $43,122 in Iron River Township, $65,068 in Stambaugh Township and $36,139 in the city of Iron River.
Voters in Crystal Falls Township will be asked to renew 3.5 mills, or $3.50 per $1,000 of taxable value, for four years for general township operating purposes. It would raise an estimated $504,639 in 2027.
In Mastodon Township, a pair of millage renewals are proposed for general operations and road improvements and maintenance. Each levy is 1.5 mills for five years and each would raise an estimated $158,742 in 2027.
Several candidates for county or township positions face no opposition on Tuesday's ballot.
Ernest Schmidt is unopposed in the Republican primary for reelection to the Iron County Road Commission.
Ian Gill is likewise unopposed in the Republican primary in District 2 to fill a partial term on the Iron County Board of Commissioners. Pete Judd was named to fill the seat in February 2025 after Mike Stafford stepped down. The district includes the city of Iron River's Precinct 1 and part of Bates Township.
In Iron River Township, Douglas Bruster is the lone candidate in the Republican primary for a partial term as a township board trustee.
