NEWBERRY - A 21-year-old Newberry man is accused of homicide and assault in a stabbing in Luce County on Sunday evening that left one man dead and another injured.
Damon Lamar Palmer II was arraigned Wednesday in the Luce County 92nd District Court on one felony count of homicide -- open murder statutory short form and one felony count of assault with intent to do great bodily harm less than murder, according to Michigan court records.
The charges stem from an incident that occurred about 7:15 p.m. Sunday, when deputies from the Luce County Sheriff's Office were called to the 300 block of East John Street in Newberry, according to a sheriff's office news release.
Deputies met a 47-year-old man who had been physically assaulted, then found a 40-year-old man in the yard who had multiple stab wounds. Despite emergency efforts, he was pronounced dead at the site, the news release states.
Family members identified him as Jay Edward Endsley. "He was the best brother, uncle, son, dad, nephew, cousin to all," his sister, Jill Ann Endsley, told the Daily Press. "He would help anyone, would give you the shirt off his own back. He surely didn't deserve this."
The 47-year-old, who police later identified as Terry Endsley, was taken to a local hospital but his injuries were not considered life-threatening.
Palmer was taken into custody without further incident at the site.

According to Michigan court records, Palmer also appeared in court Wednesday for a preliminary examination in a separate case in which he is charged with one felony count of assault with intent to do great bodily harm less than murder.
The alleged offense in that case occurred June 30, and Palmer was arraigned July 3.
